Research has proven that gender-specific treatment programs are essential for the success of women in recovery. Addiction manifests itself in distinctly different ways for women and men. The two most frequent reasons women give for not seeking treatment is fear of losing custody of their children and not having adequate child care.
The Women & Children’s Wellness program addresses these problems head-on and provides an opportunity for women to take control of their lives and better the futures of their children. Clients receive individual counseling; participate in group therapy, receive parent training; are screened for domestic violence and other problems; and are provided on-site childcare and transportation.
The program provides Family Centered/Treatment/Recovery Support Services which interface with other health and social service agencies including child welfare. An integrated service delivery system better provides for the safety, stability and well-being of children and their families affected by child abuse and neglect as well as with substance abuse disorders. Priorities include pregnant injecting drug users; pregnant and postpartum women; injecting drug users who are at high risk of HIV infection or are known to be HIV infected; parenting substance abusers; and DCFS referrals.
